4/26/24 Softball(2): Chippewa Falls-8, 10 Superior-6, 3

The Cardinals(14-1, 7-1) swept Superior(5-3) 8-6 and 10-3 in a non-conference doubleheader on a blustery, cold afternoon at Casper park.

After falling behind 6-3 in game one a Paige Steinmetz, 3rd inning, solo homer brought them to 6-4, and they added another run in the 4th making it 6-5. The Cards closed out the scoring with three in the 5th. Sophomore Willa Risinger pitched the complete game for the win.

In the nightcap the Cards exploded for five runs in both the 1st and 7th innings on their way to a 10-3 victory. Three homers in this contest helped propel CF to the victory: a 2-run HR by Lauren Shepherd in the 1st, a 3-run blast from Ali Geist in the 7th, and a solo shot right after that by Mc Kenna Bauer to close the scoring for the day.

4/26/24 Baseball: Chippewa Falls-1 Rice Lake-0

A Lucas Logslett 2nd inning solo homer was all the offense the Cards(6-4, 4-2) needed to win their second game over Rice Lake(3-7, 1-5) this week, 1-0.

In getting the win Jake Lequia escaped bases loaded jams in the third and fourth innings in shutting out the Warriors. He struck out five and walked two, plus hit a batter, in his six-plus innings before giving way to Brady Smith in the 7th. Smith and the Cardinals D held the shut out as the sophomore earned the save.

4/23/24 Baseball: Bloomer 7, McDonell Macks 2

Back at Casper Park, the Macks (3-5, 1-5 Western Cloverbelt Conference) gave up five early runs to the veteran Blackhawks (6-2, 3-1 WCC), who came out of the gate strong, led by their junior pitcher, Collin Crane.

McDonell settled in on defense afterward, as junior pitcher Cooper Mittermeyer put up six innings of work, striking out half a dozen Bloomer batters.

The hits were hard to come by for the Macks against Crane, who struck out 10 on the evening, but McDonell was able to come within three runs after five, before one more late surge by the Blackhawks put the game out of reach.

4/13/24 Softball(2): Chippewa Falls-19,15 Marshfield-1,2

Chippewa Falls (6-0, 4-0) continued their torrid hitting, sweeping Marshfield (3-4, 1-0) in a doubleheader at Casper Park: 19-1(5 inn.) and 15-2 (6 inn.). On the day the Cards scored in nine of their ten innings at the plate, only failing to do so in the fourth inning of the second game.

Chi-Hi got four innings of solid pitching from freshman Violet McIlquham in game one as fellow freshman, Delany Bero, secured the win by pitching the fifth. Meanwhile in game two senior Lakken McEathron made her season debut by pitching four innings of shutout ball before giving way to junior, Delany Berg, for the final two innings.

The Cardinals lead-off hitter, shortstop Kenna Johnston, topped a ton of great hitting performances, going 7-9 on the day with three doubles, four singles, four runs scored and two RBIs, while catcher, Lauren Shepherd, had three hits including a homer and five RBIs in game one, and center fielder, Paige Steinmetz, hit a grand slam in the nightcap.

4/12/24 Baseball: Eau Claire Regis 7, McDonell Macks 2

Playing Regis for the second straight night, this time in their home opener, the Macks (2-2, 0-2 Western Cloverbelt Conference) fell behind by an early run to the Rambers (2-3, 2-0 WCC) but quickly came back to tie the game after one.

Regis was simply not to be denied at the plate however, as they smashed seven doubles while riding a strong pitching performance from freshman Chase Brogelman.

The Macks mounted a significant bases-loaded threat in the bottom of the sixth but only managed to put one run across, and afterward a two-out, bases-loaded triple in the seventh helped the Ramblers put the game out of reach.

4/11/24 Softball: Chippewa Falls 11, Hudson 7

Back in action at Casper Park, Chi-Hi (4-0, 4-0 Big Rivers Conference), gave up a run in the top of the first against Hudson (2-2, 2-2 BRC), before a pair of homers from sophomore catcher Lauren Shepherd and senior second baseman Mykle Buhrow, each with two outs in the second, gave them back the lead.

The Raiders responded with 5 runs in the top of the second, and carried that 6-3 lead into the bottom of the third, when Chi-Hi's patience at the plate pulled them back even, plating another three runs.

After a scoreless top of the 4th, the offensive fireworks began again for the Lady Cards. With the bases loaded, Shepherd came to the plate and blasted a grand slam to left center field to blow the game open.

Chi-Hi did not score again, but strong pitching and defense preserved the lead as they remained unbeaten to start the year.

4/8/24 Baseball: McDonell Macks 19, Augusta 1 (5 innings)

On the road for their second game of the young 2024 season, the Macks (2-0 0-0 Western Cloverbelt Conference) fell behind by an early run to the Beavers (1-2, 0-0 Dairyland Conference), who held McDonell scoreless through the first two innings.

The floodgates opened in the top of third, however, as the Macks' bats came alive, plating six runs to take a commanding lead. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the third from sophomore pitcher Karson Galvez, McDonell sent an incredible 15 batters to the plate in their half of the 4th, scoring another 12 runs to put the contest truly out of reach.

Junior David Anderson and sophomore Cael Holm also saw action on the mound in the 4th and 5th, holding Augusta scoreless and keeping the Macks unbeaten.

4/5/24 Softball Doubleheader: Chippewa Falls 12, 3 Eau Claire North 3, 1

In the season opener for both teams Chippewa Falls(2-0) overcame a 2-0 deficit early to come from behind and win the opener 12-3 scoring four runs in each of the last two innings. First baseman Ali Geist's three-run double in the sixth made it an 8-3 and really changed the complexion of the game.

The nightcap proved to be a pitcher's duel Chi-Hi freshman, Delaney Bero, and Eau Claire North(0-2) junior, Ally Quaschnick, before Cardinals junior, Delany Berg, entered in the 7th to get the final two outs. Ali Geist again provided the big stick for the Cards with a two run homer.

3/2/24 WIAA Division 4 Basketball Sectional Final: #1 McDonell Lady Macks 58, #1 Fall Creek 38

At Eau Claire North for the Sectional Final, the Lady Macks (26-2, 13-1 Western Cloverbelt Conference) faced a familiar foe in the Crickets (24-4, 13-1 WCC), who represented McDonell's only conference loss the last two years.

As the rubber match went back and forth initially, the Lady Macks could never quite pull away from Fall Creek, who had a late surge and pulled within a single basket at the break. In the second half, however, McDonell steadily built and then maintained a double-digit advantage, punching their ticket to State for the fourth straight year!

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Freshman guard EllaMay Cooper notched 14 of her game-high 20 points in a phenomenal second half, while senior center Aubrey Dorn was simply dominant, finishing with 19 points and a double-double despite foul trouble in the first half. Senior point guard Emily Cooper hit a trio of triples in the game and led the way for McDonell in the first half, tallying 10 of her 13 points before halftime.

3/1/24 WIAA Division 4 Basketball Regional Semi-Final: #3 Spring Valley 53, #6 McDonell Macks 46

In a rematch of their very first game of the season, but this time on the road in a win-or-go-home scenario, the Macks (16-9 8-6 Western Cloverbelt Conference) faced off against a talented and experienced squad in the Cardinals (19-6, 11-3 Dunn-St. Croix).

Throughout the night, neither team was able to pull away by more than three possessions, as the teams traded the lead back and forth. In the final minutes, however, some timely shooting by Spring Valley, undoubtedly spurred on by a full house of fans, propelled them to a Regional Final and ended McDonell's season.

WOGO "RadioActive" Award Watch:
Sophomore forward Karson Galvez hit four threes and notched 16 points to lead the team, while junior guard Jordan Sikora played an efficient offensive game and added 12. Sophomore guard Cael Holm hit a trio of triples to finish with 9, while junior guard Cooper Mittermeyer tallied two big threes in the first half and ended his night with 6 points.
